"Racing The Rain"

"Racing The Rain" was created by me, Kristina Shands. In case you don't know, you can reach me at MariosHaven@gmail.com. Hope you enjoy!

The clouds had rolled in within seconds. Jade had no idea clouds could cross the sky that quickly. She looked at the long line of customers ahead of her. Jade was in a clothing store buying herself an outfit for Friday’s party.
Friday’s party was going to be something amazing. Jade’s friend, Stephanie, was throwing a house warming party and everyone was expected to be there. Jade wanted to be there looking fresh!
Peaking though the window, Jade hoped the line would go a bit faster. Her car was in the auto shop being fixed and she didn’t have an umbrella. She was going to have to walk five blocks to the nearest bus stop or seven blocks to the nearest subway station. Either way, she didn’t want to have to walk in the rain.
Five minutes later, Jade was passing the cashier enough money to cover the cost of her outfit. Grabbing her bag, Jade walked to the exit of the store. As she held tightly to the door and pulled it open, a bright purple streak of lightening danced across the sky. Within seconds a loud roar of thunder was heard overhead.
Fearing she was going to get caught in the rain, Jade quickly started her five block walk. Looking up, Jade noticed the difference in the sky. Just twenty minutes ago it was clear and bright blue. Now it was frightening, dark, and filled with water bearing clouds.
Jade only made it to the end of the block before another clash of lightening and thunder exploded above her. As she crossed the street, she felt the warning drops of rain on her skin. As she looked around, she could see everyone had already ran for cover. She stood alone on the once crowded avenue.
But she trotted along anyways. After only three steps on the second block, the sky burst open. Everything around her was instantly soaked. Jade picked up her pace to a sprint. I should’ve brought an umbrella she thought as she rushed through the street.
By the end of the third block, Jade stopped running. I’m already wet she thought as she slowly walked along the road. Looking ahead she could see the shelter of the bus stop. As she went on, she thought of getting out of the rain under the roof of the stop.
She was so caught into thinking about escaping the rain, she didn’t hear the bus rolling along the street. Since the rain was pouring so quickly, the street had a miniature river flowing along the surface of the sidewalk. When the bus drove by, it splashed loads of water onto her. Feeling disgusted with street water sprayed on her, Jade let out a brief scream.
“Here,” a voice said behind Jade. Startled, she jumped. “Sorry for scaring you. Here.”
Coming from behind her was a young man with a large umbrella above his head. In his hand was a black and white handkerchief. Looking at the man, Jade took the clean cloth and wiped her face off. The man was tall and wore a crisp charcoal suit. Jade had no doubt in her mind that this man was beyond handsome.
“T-thank you.” She stuttered handing him back his handkerchief.
“You’re welcome. I saw the bus splash all that water on you. Where’s your umbrella?”
Jade hesitated. She was letting his soothing voice ring in her mind. “I didn’t watch the news this morning. I was hoping to get to the bus stop before it started.” Suddenly feeling embarrassed about being sheltered by this man and not even being introduced to him, she blurted out “I’m Jade by the way.”
The man licked his thick lips. “My name’s Mario.” He extended his hand and Jade took it firmly. “Now you said you were trying to catch the bus?” Mario asked.
“Yeah,” Jade said noticing that the same bus that splattered water on her was two blocks away at its stop letting people on. “I was supposed to take the bus.”
“I have a car around the corner. If you don’t mind, I’ll drive you home.”
Jade weighed her two options. She looked at the bus that was now leaving and then down the road she had just traveled. She couldn’t see another bus in sight. Then she looked at Mario. This was a young remarkably attractive man who was covering her from the heavy rain around them.
“My mother always told me to not get into a car with someone I didn’t know.”
Mario let out a broad smile. “Well tell your mother that everyone you don’t know isn’t out to hurt you.”
Jade looked into Mario’s brown eyes. She some how felt safe around him. Looking down the street once more to see a bus-less road Jade nodded her head as she said “Okay. I’ll take a ride with you.”
Mario and Jade walked to the end of the block and then around the corner. It wasn’t long until Mario pointed to a silver Nissan Altima. Jade looked at her wet clothes, then to Mario’s clean suit and his sparkling new car.
“I’m soaking wet,” She said. “I can’t get into your car.”
“Its fine,” he said as he used his car key to unlock the doors. He walked to the front passenger seat and opened the door for Jade.
“Are you sure?” She asked peaking into the car and its light colored leather interior.
Mario showed her his striking smile again. “Yes I’m sure.”
Jade swallowed hard as she stepped into his car. Mario walked over to the driver’s side and opened the door to let himself inside. Once he was in, he put the key into the ignition and drove away.

* * *

Mario and Jade had been driving in the rain for almost thirty minutes. During the ride they had exchanged their interests and many other things about     themselves. Jade had explained that she was out in the rain to buy an outfit for Stephanie’s party Friday. Mario explained he was planning on becoming a singer. He had just came from an interview with Clive Davis, the leader of a record company, and that’s why he was wearing the flashy suit.
“I think the interview went well,” he explained.
“Oh really?” Jade said. “That’s nice. I hope everything goes nicely for you.”
“Thank you.” Mario slowed his car down at a red light. “You said you lived on 59th and River Avenue, right?”
“Yeah, it’s a couple of blocks ahead.”
Jade felt sad. She had a great time in the short half an hour. They shared a lot of similarities which led to a lot of laughs. However this was all coming to an end. After the light turned green, it only took three minutes for Mario to park in front of Jade’s apartment building.
Jade let out a breath of air. “Well, this is it,” she said.
“Yeah, I guess it is. Let me walk you upstairs.” Mario offered.
Jade smiled at his generosity. “I would like that.”
They walked into the building and rode the elevator to the third floor. After getting off the elevator, Jade lead Mario to apartment 3A. Jade stood there with her back leaning against her door while Mario stood in front of her.
He had taken off his suit jacket in the car and Jade could smell the cologne that was gushing through his cream button-down shirt. She inhaled deeply wishing she could have this scent forever.
“Well,” Mario said to break the silence.
Jade looked into Mario’s brown eyes. There were so many things about him she wanted to savior eternally. “Will I ever see you again?” She blurted out. The feeling of never seeing him again was tearing her soul apart.
Mario gazed back into Jade’s eyes. “I hope so.” He dug into his back pocket and pulled out a business card. As he softly placed it in her hand, he placed a light kiss on her cheek.
Jade could feel herself blush as Mario’s lips left her right cheek. Speechless she fingered the business card, but she couldn’t get her eyes to leave his.
“I’ll see you around,” Mario said as he stepped towards the elevator.
“Wait!” She cried. This didn’t feel right to her. He was just going to leave like this? Feeling embarrassed for the umpteenth time today, Jade looked down to her feet. “I guess…I’ll call you.” She looked up in time to see Mario heading into the elevator.
“I’ll be waiting for your call.” And just like that, Mario left as suddenly as he came.

Jade studied her figure in front of the mirror. It was Friday night and she was looking beautiful! Her hair was out and hung loose around her shoulders. Her peach colored top was cut low and its neckline was bejeweled with small beads. Her tight jeans that hugged her hips gave way to a pair of leather high heeled boots.
Jade twirled in front of the full length mirror again. Seeing these clothes reminded her of that rainy day and meeting Mario. She turned to her dresser. On top of it was his business card. That day after they departed, she went into her apartment and put the card safely on top of her dresser.
She called him since then, but his answering machine picked up. Afraid to leave a message, she hung up. Since then she hasn’t touched the card again. But every now and then she would waltz into her room, and look at the card to remind her of that eventful day.
After applying some lip gloss and eye shadow, she left her apartment building. Downstairs she met Gina, a friend who was also on her way to Stephanie’s party. Jade’s car was still being repaired; a hassle Jade wished would fix itself soon.
Getting to Stephanie’s house didn’t take long. Once they were there, Jade thanked Gina for the ride. Getting out the car, Jade looked at Stephanie’s new home. Jade and Stephanie were old friends who could always count on each other to be there for one another. When Jade found out Stephanie was getting a new house, Jade was most happy for her.
As Jade made her way to the house and through the crowd, she glanced around for Stephanie. When at last she found her, Stephanie was too enveloped in her new boyfriend to give Jade a grand tour of her new home.
Being cast aside, Jade walked around by herself. As she went, almost everywhere she looked, she spotted another couple. Relationships and love rang everywhere. It was as if it was mocking her for not taking more action with Mario.
Feeling in a rut throughout the party, Jade made up her mind to sit by the pool side. Staring at the moonlight that bounced off the water, she felt envious of Stephanie’s fortunes. She stumbled across this wonderful house and bought it. When Jade stumbled across something amazing, she didn’t have the guts to call it back.
She bit on her bottom lip as she looked at Gina. Her ride home was also cuddled with someone. Too preoccupied with her thoughts to enjoy the party, Jade decided to head to the front of the house. Looking through the back door and seeing the crowded hallway, she settled on walking alongside the house.
Standing on the edge of the lawn, she looked down the street and spotted a small grocery store. Thinking about buying a bar of chocolate, Jade headed for the store.
       “Leaving so soon?”
Hearing a familiar voice, Jade spun around towards to the house. Her face lit up when she placed her eyes on someone she wouldn’t think of seeing here.
“Mario!” She exclaimed as she ran to him. When she was face to face with him she wrapped her arms around him. “I called you, I really did.” She said into his chest.
Mario wrapped his own arms around her. “I know. You didn’t leave a message. I figured it was you. I wanted to call you back. Why did you block your number?”
Still in Mario’s arms, Jade shrugged her shoulders. “I don’t know. Just afraid, I guess.”
       “Afraid of what?”
“Afraid of being disappointed. Afraid that some how you wouldn’t want to see me.”
Mario took Jade out of his arms so he could look her in the eyes. “You would never have to worry about that. That day we met,” he paused a while and looked deep into her eyes. “There was just something there that I felt I needed to have forever. I needed to be with you forever.”
As if all of Jade’s problems had been answered, she felt full of joy. She took her hand into his.
“Let’s get out of here.” Jade suggested.
       “Where to?” Mario asked.
“I have some popcorn and a new DVD at my house.”
“59th Street and River Avenue, apartment 3A?” he asked.
Jade smiled at his memory. “Yup.”
Hand in hand, Jade and Mario walked to his parked car. After settling inside, they drove away on the moonlighted driveway together.
