"Racing The Rain" was created by me, Kristina Shands. In case you don't know, you can reach me at MariosHaven@gmail.com. Hope you enjoy!
The clouds had rolled in within seconds. Jade had no idea clouds could cross the sky that quickly. She looked at the long line of customers ahead of her. Jade was in a clothing store buying herself an outfit for Friday’s party.
Friday’s party was going to be something amazing. Jade’s friend, Stephanie, was throwing a house warming party and everyone was expected to be there. Jade wanted to be there looking fresh!
Peaking though the window, Jade hoped the line would go a bit faster. Her car was in the auto shop being fixed and she didn’t have an umbrella. She was going to have to walk five blocks to the nearest bus stop or seven blocks to the nearest subway station. Either way, she didn’t want to have to walk in the rain.
Five minutes later, Jade was passing the cashier enough money to cover the cost of her outfit. Grabbing her bag, Jade walked to the exit of the store. As she held tightly to the door and pulled it open, a bright purple streak of lightening danced across the sky. Within seconds a loud roar of thunder was heard overhead.
Fearing she was going to get caught in the rain, Jade quickly started her five block walk. Looking up, Jade noticed the difference in the sky. Just twenty minutes ago it was clear and bright blue. Now it was frightening, dark, and filled with water bearing clouds.
Jade only made it to the end of the block before another clash of lightening and thunder exploded above her. As she crossed the street, she felt the warning drops of rain on her skin. As she looked around, she could see everyone had already ran for cover. She stood alone on the once crowded avenue.
But she trotted along anyways. After only three steps on the second block, the sky burst open. Everything around her was instantly soaked. Jade picked up her pace to a sprint. I should’ve brought an umbrella she thought as she rushed through the street.
By the end of the third block, Jade stopped running. I’m already wet she thought as she slowly walked along the road. Looking ahead she could see the shelter of the bus stop. As she went on, she thought of getting out of the rain under the roof of the stop.
She was so caught into thinking about escaping the rain, she didn’t hear the bus rolling along the street. Since the rain was pouring so quickly, the street had a miniature river flowing along the surface of the sidewalk. When the bus drove by, it splashed loads of water onto her. Feeling disgusted with street water sprayed on her, Jade let out a brief scream.
“Here,” a voice said behind Jade. Startled, she jumped. “Sorry for scaring you. Here.”
Coming from behind her was a young man with a large umbrella above his head. In his hand was a black and white handkerchief. Looking at the man, Jade took the clean cloth and wiped her face off. The man was tall and wore a crisp charcoal suit. Jade had no doubt in her mind that this man was beyond handsome.
“T-thank you.” She stuttered handing him back his handkerchief.
“You’re welcome. I saw the bus splash all that water on you. Where’s your umbrella?”
Jade hesitated. She was letting his soothing voice ring in her mind. “I didn’t watch the news this morning. I was hoping to get to the bus stop before it started.” Suddenly feeling embarrassed about being sheltered by this man and not even being introduced to him, she blurted out “I’m Jade by the way.”
The man licked his thick lips. “My name’s Mario.” He extended his hand and Jade took it firmly. “Now you said you were trying to catch the bus?” Mario asked.
“Yeah,” Jade said noticing that the same bus that splattered water on her was two blocks away at its stop letting people on. “I was supposed to take the bus.”
“I have a car around the corner. If you don’t mind, I’ll drive you home.”
Jade weighed her two options. She looked at the bus that was now leaving and then down the road she had just traveled. She couldn’t see another bus in sight. Then she looked at Mario. This was a young remarkably attractive man who was covering her from the heavy rain around them.
“My mother always told me to not get into a car with someone I didn’t know.”
Mario let out a broad smile. “Well tell your mother that everyone you don’t know isn’t out to hurt you.”
Jade looked into Mario’s brown eyes. She some how felt safe around him. Looking down the street once more to see a bus-less road Jade nodded her head as she said “Okay. I’ll take a ride with you.”
Mario and Jade walked to the end of the block and then around the corner. It wasn’t long until Mario pointed to a silver Nissan Altima. Jade looked at her wet clothes, then to Mario’s clean suit and his sparkling new car.
“I’m soaking wet,” She said. “I can’t get into your car.”
“Its fine,” he said as he used his car key to unlock the doors. He walked to the front passenger seat and opened the door for Jade.
“Are you sure?” She asked peaking into the car and its light colored leather interior.
Mario showed her his striking smile again. “Yes I’m sure.”
Jade swallowed hard as she stepped into his car. Mario walked over to the driver’s side and opened the door to let himself inside. Once he was in, he put the key into the ignition and drove away.
